United States of America State of California On Authority of the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Militia: Know Ye. That reposing special trust and confidence into the Fidelity, Integrity and Patriotism of James H. Carleton. I, John G. Downey, Governor of the State of California, and Commander=in=Chief of the Military thereof, and in the name and by the authority of the People of said State, do hereby Appoint and CommiSsion the [illegible]id James H. Carleton as Colonel Infantry, California Volunteers. to take ranks as such from the Twenty Sixth day of July A D. 1861.
In Testimony Whereof, I have caused the Great Seal of the State to be hereunto affixed. WitneSs my hand, at the City of Sacramento, on the Nineteenth day of August A.D. 1861. and of the Independence of the United States of America the eighty sixth.
