Fort Craig, [illegible], Sept. 21st, 1863
My Dear Wife, Your better [illegible] August 16th I have just [illegible] and am [illegible] glad to hear that you are all well, This marks the fifth letter that I have written to you since I returned from my Indian Expedition. I am very glad to know that you are better conteneted where you [illegible], although, as for myself, I have never been more disheartened and disgusted than I am at present. In fact, I am home-sick, I am tired and sick of the service in this God-forsaken county [country?]. and [illegible] he assured that I shall get home as soon as I can, even if I do not have a cent. The loss of money which I spoke to you of in my previous letter, is very severe on me, I hardly know how I shall get along.
Capt Mitchell, [illegible] will [illegible] as Lieut. Mitchell, is now here confined with a sentinel over him, he is confined to a hole about 8 feet [equal?], just here in view of my quarters. He deserted from one service and went over into Mexico where he though that the Government would not be able to [illegible, get?] him, but the laws allow them to take persons from Mexico, when [illegible, arranged?] with [illegible], and General [illegible] got up some [illegible] change, and made arrangements with the Mexican Government to deliver him up, Any way [anyway?] they got him and sent him to this post where he has been for nearly two weeks, and God knows, I pity-him. He is to be tried next week by a [illegible, S?] Court Martial, and it is [illegible] possible that
