Fort Craig N.M. December 28th, 1863
My Dear Girl,
I received today two letters from you, one dated November 1st and the other November 8th, and was glad to know that you were enjoying good health, and I know that you have received some money from me before this. I send you by this, another one hundred dollars, which you must make the best use of. I have just now, within an hour, received orders to move, with my company, to Fort Union, which is about 350 miles from here, in the direction of [the word Fort crossed out] St. Louis, and I do not like it much, as it is very cold here now, plenty of snow and ice, and you may know that it is anything but pleasant to sleep in the snow for three weeks every night. How- ever I shall probably get through with it as I have done heretofore. I have no other news interesting to you, but will [the word give crossed out] again ask you to send me some newspaper.
